For Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection, six contemporary artists explore the Guggenheim collection to create the museum’s first artist-curated exhibition. Cai Guo-Qiang, Paul Chan, Jenny Holzer, Julie Mehretu, Richard Prince, and Carrie Mae Weems present nearly 300 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and installations from the turn of the century to 1980 for an exhibition occupying the entire rotunda of the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building. Creating unique and critical dialogues with the Guggenheim’s history and the history of modern and contemporary art, these artists-curators interpret the collection through their individual perspectives.
